He was an active fan of FC "Mariupol", he constantly trained, and attended sports sections in boxing and kickboxing, performing at the amateur level. He participated in mass sports events in the city and promoted a healthy lifestyle.
His friends say that the time of his personality formation and becoming a patriot was during the active hostilities in Donbas. From a young age, the boy loved Ukraine. At the age of 16, he joined the Civil Corps "Azov", and participated in patriotic actions and training. "Smurfik" loved traveling as much as football. He visited many cities in Ukraine and often hitchhiked. In the 2017/18 season, at the age of 18, he had a "golden season". He did everything for his favorite team to have as many fans as possible. He made sketches of banners and looked for paint and fabric for performances in the sector.
Even then, Mykola wanted to fight for Ukraine's independence in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but a severe skull injury sustained in childhood did not give him a chance to get into the army or volunteer battalion. Having no medical education, he decided to help our wounded warriors at the call of his heart, and in June 2018 he was trained at the training center "Hospitallers" - a battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army. On July 1, 2018, he went on his first mission to the village of Pisky, Yasynuvata district, Donetsk region, as part of the medical group "Asap - Pisky". Mykola managed to save the lives of several soldiers, evacuating them from the front line and providing them with the necessary medical care in time.
In the autumn of 2018, he was assigned to the 8th Separate Battalion of the Aratta UDA with the call sign "Smurfik". He performed tasks near the city of Mariupol and rescued Ukrainian soldiers in Shyrokyne, Pisky, and Vodiane. On April 10, 2019, near the village of Vodiane (Donetsk region), a brave young man was seriously wounded by a sniper bullet in the head. He was evacuated to a hospital in Dnipro in critical condition. For five days, doctors fought for the life of a brave fan. Mykola Volkov died on April 15, 2019. He was buried in the Alley of Glory of the Old Crimean Cemetery in his hometown. On March 13, 2020, he was awarded the Medal "For Courage", III degree (posthumously).
