Ihor Kostenko is a fan of the "Karpaty" football club (Lviv).
Ihor Ihorovych Kostenko was born on December 31, 1991 in the village of Zubrets (Buchatsky district, Ternopil region). He studied at the Zubretsk secondary school, after which he studied for two years at the Buchach collegium named after St. Josaphat - institutions with in-depth study of history and Christianity. When it came time to choose an educational institution for higher education, no one had any doubt that it would be Lviv. The young man really liked this city, about which he read a lot, and in the end he entered the geography faculty of the Ivan Franko Lviv National University.
After moving to Lviv, Ihor actively supported the local FC "Karpaty" at home and away matches, was in the fan section, but did not belong to any of the surrounding football teams. In 2009, he joined the All-Ukrainian Brotherhood of Soldiers of the OUN-UPA named after Corporal General Roman Shukhevich. Ihor's friends and family will later remember that he was a true patriot of Ukraine long before the Revolution of Dignity and the events that preceded it. He loved the culture of his country very much, was concerned about the future of the country and felt its pain.
He combined his studies at the university with work as a journalist in the online publication "Sportanalytika". He was the initiator of the creation of the Ukrainian-language online sports publication allsport24.com, the appearance of which was delayed due to the participation of its developers in the Maidan events. He was an active editor of the Ukrainian Wikipedia (he contributed under the nickname Ig2000). Over two and a half years of participation, he created more than 280 articles. Ihor longed for Ukraine to follow the European path of development, and therefore he was very indignant at the step back from this direction chosen by the then criminal authorities of the country.
He was an active participant in the protests in the capital from the very beginning. He went to the Maidan several times, and was there on the night of November 30, 2013, when the Berkut protesters brutally dispersed the students. During the events in the center of the capital, Ihor did not belong to any individual organization or hundred, not wanting to be restricted in his freedom of action. He looked for work himself and helped where there were not enough free hands. He was also on the Maidan on the eve of the first murders (of Yury Verbytskyi and Serhiy Nigoyan), shortly after which he and other Lviv residents left for home.
The next time they were prompted to go to the capital by news from the Maidan, where there were fierce confrontations with the security forces and new murders of participants in the revolution. Ihor, together with two friends, arrived at half past one in the morning on February 19, and the next night they went to the KMDA building. On the morning of February 20, he was going to help with the construction of barricades, until suddenly they reported that the "Berkutov" began to retreat and the people went on the offensive. Ihor Kostenko died from a bullet wound to the heart, his body was found near the October Palace on Instytutska Street, and later it was moved to St. Michael's Cathedral.
On February 23, 2014, Ihor was buried in his native village of Zubrets in Buchach region. Thousands of people accompanied the Hero's body on the way to the last earthly refuge, farewells were held in many cities of the Ternopil region. On February 18, 2015, a memorial plaque to his student - Igor Kostenko, was unveiled on the wall of the Buchatsky Collegium named after St. Josaphat. Also in the village Bison was renamed after the street on which he lived. On November 21, 2014, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Golden Star Order (posthumously).
